Examples of Generative Strategies in Practice

Worked Examples/Demonstration: A science teacher records a talk introducing a new concept and the equation associated with that new concept. He records himself writing on his iPad and talking as he works through the problem. He saves this recording and uploads the video, along with another problem related to this same concept, for students work on then submit. Then during a live session, he introduces yet another problem related to the new concept—this one more complex—and asks the students to work on it in small breakout groups during their live session. He checks in on the groups as they work, then he has them return to the main room and share their work; then he wraps up by addressing issues and questions he saw arise during the class session.

This content area example can readily be adapted to SEL objectives. Instead of a math-based problem, you could present an example of a social or emotional challenge you have had or have helped a student with and talk through how you or you and that student worked on the problem: what strategies you or they employed, how it went, what was learned. After recording yourself, you can upload the video and give your students the asynchronous assignment of writing out ideas about how they would handle that same or another given situation. Depending on the nature of the problem you present, you could then have students share their ideas in small groups during a live video session, then share what happened in the small groups with the whole class to identify a range of strategies. If the topic is one that you feel the content may be too sensitive for students to personalize, you could provide students a case study/scenario with your video and have students write up an analysis of that case study/scenario asynchronously, then discuss it during a live session using a small-group or whole-group structure.
